LGBT RIGHTS - ALLRIOT CAMPAIGN

SEXUALITY IN THE MODERN WORLD

The closet door is opening up, the gloves are coming off, and the world is finally warming up to the idea of gay marriage. The LGBT community is no longer underground, but a neighbor of the Average Joe. As an integral part of human society, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex individuals have the right to free speech, free press, free love, and yes, overpriced wedding cakes. We at AllRiot strongly support the freedom to choose a partner, and we want this campaign to be one of the most exemplary forms of revolution in modern society.

Our campaign advocates that more governments worldwide legalize same-sex marriage and uphold constitutional rights. Most importantly, as members of a democratic society, and taxpayers as well, everyone should be entitled to all of the legislative benefits as others. With these gains, we want the momentum to continue. We understand that it will take time, but dammit, we can try. Love is all around, and your choice of who to share it with is more important than the orifice you choose to use.

1. THE GENDER AGENDA

LGBT rights share a place in history amongst many other enduring battles. As sexual roles evolve over time--amongst all orientations--more and more, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex individuals face the challenge of achieving societal inclusion. LGBT proponents have remained vigilant while fighting against several prominent fronts, and the debate that has erupted across the modern world is a direct result of the LGBT community working in tandem with international rights groups to advance and protect their civil liberties.

LGBT ACTIVISM: PROGRESS SO FAR

There are political, cultural, and health-related objectives for same-sex proponents related to partnership/ marriage, STI prevention, assisted reproduction, domestic/ relationship violence, and social justice; campaigners have experienced progress and setbacks simultaneously, yet continue to persevere against these challenges. Members of GLAD, the ACLU, HRW, the Southern Poverty Law Center, and Amnesty International, along with countless others work side-by-side with individuals and groups to place pressure on suppressive governments that refuse to recognise the evolving definitions of sexuality.
Thanks to LGBTQI campaigners around the World, an increasing number of countries recognise same-sex marriage / civil partnerships.

PROGRESS IS SLOW

Employment Non-Discrimination Act
Legislatively, the world stands divided. For example, the Leadership Conference confers that US President Barack Obama forcibly introduced executive orders in response to Congress’s suppression of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. The ACLU has also challenged the OFCCP’s compliance with equal-opportunity employment, and GLAD, alongside other organisations, issued reports concerning the rights of HIV-infected persons, including their right to access housing, school, accommodation, and healthcare.

US Congress
Members of Congress passed two bills (HJ Res 43 and 44) that would fire or harshly reprimand LGBT members for going to reproductive clinics, as well as block the Human Rights Amendment Act’s protection of access to fair employment.

Privacy & Fair Treatment
Regarding privacy and fair treatment, the ACLU also addressed concerns of police surveillance in the LGBT community, citing that 22% of transgender persons in America received unfair, harsh treatment from authorities.

Europe
Although Europe remains more progressive in LGBT rights, the European Court of Justice ruled in favor of France’s ban on male homosexuals (MSM) blood donations, citing disease disease prevalence per country as the deciding factor in the case.

Many countries impose legal sanctions that target LGBT people, criminalize consensual same-sex relations or discussion of LGBT rights, often for political gain. Punishments include prison sentences, flogging, and even the death penalty.
This interactive map created by Human Rights Watch gives you the snapshot of each country's laws.

Laws criminalizing consensual same-sex conduct and discussion of LGBT rights vary around the world:

Openly gay male job applicants are 40% less likely to be granted an interview

SUPPORTING GAY YOUTH

While many lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and intersex (LGBTQI) youth thrive during their adolescent years, some are struggling to fit in. Negative attitudes toward LGBT people put these youth at increased risk for experiences with violence, bullying, harassment, cyber bullying, physical assault, and suicide-related behaviors.
LGBT youth are twice as likely as their peers to say that they have been physically assaulted at school.
