We’re making an urgent call to arms to our fans in light of new developments on Wikileaks founder Julian Assange’s extradition case. We see his arrest as a blatant attack on freedom of the press. Regardless of what you think of Julian Assange, the principle here is important. Julian Assange is responsible for uncovering war crimes in Iraq. This was important information in the public interest and an open and transparent democracy.
UK Home Secretary Sajid Javid has signed off on a formal request to extradite Assange to the US, where he could face up to 175 in prison, torture, cruel and inhumane treatment, or possibly the death penalty under America’s outdated 1917 Espionage Act, contravening Article III of the European Convention on Human Rights.
The countdown to Assange’s terrible fate in the US is ticking and ‘we the people’ have very little time to act. Assange is currently serving his 50-week sentence at Belmarsh prison, but his deteriorating physical and mental health are raising the stakes in his case.
Proceeds will go towards financing his defence, maintaining the Wikileaks website, campaigning for his release, paying website staff, and other things.
Please stand with us, contribute what you can, spread the word and fight together in the name of press freedom and democracy!
